Según la man-page de startx:
Note that in the Debian GNU/Linux system, what many people
traditionally put in the .xinitrc file should go in .xses
sion instead; the idea is that the user's X environment
should look and act the same whether startx, xdm, or xinit
is used to start the X session. All discussion of .xini
trc below applies equally well to .xsession. Keep in
mind, however, that X sessions started from xdm will com
pletely disregard the .xinitrc file.
Traduciendo:
la idea en Debian es poner en .xsession la personalización
de X windows. De esa manera el "entorno" será el mismo ya
sea que se inicie con startx, [xgk]dm o xinit.
La función del .xinitrc es ejecutarse al arrancar el X server.
Cuando usas [xgk]dm para loguearte desde un entorno gráfico,
el X server ya arrancó, y el contenido de .xinitrc es
ignorado (al menos en Debian).
