RE: potato (libc6 is getting to me)
You don't need to reinstall Linux, if that is what you intend to do.
Just install the stable potato libc6 and friends and you will be fine.

All I did was to copy ldconfig from my other machine to this one, then I
reinstalled:
libc6_2.1.3-13_i386.deb
libc6-dev_2.1.3-13_i386.deb
libdb2_2.4.14-2.7.7.1.c_i386.deb
libdb2-dev_2.4.14-2.7.7.1.c_i386.deb
libdb2-util_2.4.14-2.7.7.1.c.deb
locales_2.1.3-13_i386.deb
