Bug#357543: tetex-bin: Bad permissions on font directory - prints document with blank fonts!

Unrelated to your problem, but it might be interesting for you to
install the cm-super package. That way you would get the EC fonts as
Type 1 fonts.

Which version of tex-common do you have installed? Recently, there have
been some changes to the way /var/cache/fonts/ is handled. Does the
version in unstable solve your problem? Be sure to read
/usr/share/doc/tex-common/README.Debian.
