I meanwhile found that you write in your README.Debian and even in the
failure message of the postinst script that tetex-extra is needed. But
that doesn't help, because tetex-bin's postinst calls "fmtutil --all"
(and it must do that, for the pool files might have changed). Therefore
the upgrade fails without any possibility of the user knowing why.
You must either depend on tetex-extra, or check in the postinst script
whether amstex.tex is available
