Interesting, in /etc/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg all the map files provided
bu tetex-extra are commented out in exactly that fassion, that updmap
uses when disabeling a map file entry. This looks as if at some point
you had on tetex-bin and tetex-base installed, but
/var/lib/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg still contained the entries from
tetex-extra. If updmap-sys is called under such circumstances, it
advices you to call 'updmap-sys --syncwithtrees'. That would write a
new updmap.cfg to TEXMFSYSCONGIG/web2c = /tex/texmf/web2c with all
missing map files commented out like above.

Did something like this happen around 2005-12-18? If yes, it would be
interesting though probably to late to find out why it happend. If no,
then I am out of ideas ...

BTW, calling 'updmap-sys --syncwithtrees' is a bad idea on a Debian
system. We have an open bug for that particular issue.
