Yes. Now pdflatex prints the same line as above at me and the pdf file
looks good:

$ pdffonts test.pdf 
name                                 type         emb sub uni object ID
------------------------------------ ------------ --- --- --- ---------
WYVIPG+CMR10                         Type 1       yes yes no       6  0

BTW: When should I call updmap and when updmap-sys?
