This is strange - I just downloaded the files from people.debian.org and
extracted them both ways (dpkg-source and tar+patch), and in both cases
there was no problem applying the patch, and an offset of 1 line only
for writefont.c.

Perhaps you didn't use the proper version of the orig.tar.gz?
