tetex and defoma

before i duplicate anyones work, has there been much thought/code put
into tetex defoma integration?

as far as i can see, there's two distinct parts to this:

1. registering all the tetex fonts with defoma.

2. using defoma registered fonts within tetex apps.
those that i can think of are: plain TeX, pdfTeX (which can do
   TTF), LaTeX, ConTeXt and dvips.

(2) is the one i'm particularly interested in, since adding a few
truetype fonts to pdfLaTeX fonts recently was a lot more work that it
needed to be ;)

as far as i can see, (2) is "just" a matter of generating the right
font metric files, generating a few .map files, and then symlinking
everything into somewhere that kpathsea can reach.

it should also be possible to do (2) completely outside of the tetex
packages, assuming i can add a new path to the relevant kpathsea
search paths (which i can with the new texmf.d stuff), much as
x-ttcidfont-conf does for X -- although integration would of course be
the best long-term solution.

i would very much like to see a world where people can Just Use a
defoma-registered font within LaTeX/dvips/ghostscript and have it Just
Work all the way through the toolchain.

(i'm by no means an expert on fonts or TeX, especially when it comes
to non-english issues)
