I am running a pdc20262 (Promise Ultra 66) with a debian 2.6.8 kernel with no
problems. But I have had no problems with it using any kernel from Sarge: I
was using 2.4 kernels until about the end of 2004 (2.4.27 is the last one I
used), then I switched to 2.6 kernels and am now using 2.6.8.

Of course, I am sure I have a completely different hardware and software
configuration but it seems to be working for me.

hdparm tells me I am running with DMA enabled -- here is the output of hdparm
-v:

/dev/hde:
 multcount    =  0 (off)
 IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 39560/16/63, sectors = 39876480, start = 0
