Aha! justified paranoia.  Yes.  I have had that much damage from a
Windows install once.

So if all else fails, I can use, say, knoppix, to de-tar my backup files over
NFS from another machine to restore my wiped partitions, and then use
this rescue procedure to boot into the restored linux system.
