lsmod suggests that the OSS modules are loaded.
I have viacxxx too.
`lsmod`

via82cxxx_audio 17692 2

Make sure that all via stuff is loaded. You can configure your modules with `modconf`.
Are you in the group audio? You can see it with `groups`
If not, try this:
# adduser you_username_on_your_sarge_box audio
Than (re)start your gnome again, should work.

P.S.: Is there a way to search existing debian bugs by keywords ?
I couldn't find a way, the page http://www.debian.org/Bugs/ only knows
to search by package, source package, maintainer email, submitter email,
severity or tag. Google does not seem to have access to the bugs.
You can install apt-listbugs and if you install a new package, so apt-listbug displays all known bugs and you would be asked if your want to install that package. You can also use
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=put_your_package_name_here

Did you know that if you play a Windows 2000 cd backwards, you
will hear the voice of Satan?

That's nothing! If you play it forward, it'll install Windows 2000.
