I'm not sure what you mean when you say "porting". You have used it to 
describe installing Linux (from solaris) and creating debian packages.

1. Install Linux http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/sparc/install
2. Practice downloading, compiling and installing software. A good place 
for free software is ftp://ftp.gnu.org Most things that you will download 
there have a file called INSTALL. That file tells you how to 
configure/compile/install the software.
3. Practice making .debs. (link above)
4. Check out http://www.debian.org/devel/join/
