Another update:
I said, that not all changes apply to the Debian packaging (commentary,
versioning changes in most files or changes to files which do not belong
to the Debian package at all).
I'd stripped all those (or most of them) out of the diff, see attachment.
The diffstat is now again much smaller:
70 files changed, 1891 insertions(+), 593 deletions(-)
