Bug#587909: homedirnotify plugin: unusable in big setups

package: kdebase-kio-plugins
version: 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-6+lenny1
tags: upstream

Hi,

I'm deploying lenny in a big setup with 250000 users and 10000 groups in LDAP.
KDE works nice, but mounting removable media took 10-15min, which is not
unacceptable.

After some investigation I found the culprit which is the homedirnotify plugin
from kded. (If you look at the code of it it becomes obvious, it cycles
through all users and all groups...)

So I wonder,

a.) what is this plugin used for?

b.) what is the proper way to disable it? For now I've
diverted /usr/share/services/kded/homedirnotify.desktop and set auto-load and
load-on-demand to false, but there must be a better way. Where in /etc/ to
drop my modified .desktop file?

c.) it depends a bit on the answer to a.) but I think the design of the plugin
is broken. Whats the use of cycling through all groups and users?

cheers,
	Holger
