I don't think this is a configuration issue. It probably has to do
with alsa. Is alsa installed and configured correctly on your system?
Does alsamixer work from a terminal?
alsamixer works from the terminal. I highlight that the sound config changes are correlated with plasma-weather (is changes on 'popup applet' in it's configuration window) ones.
When I change the kmix settings (manually!), sound does work.
