Package: quanta
Version: 1:3.3.2-6
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss
The justification for grave bug is more accurately described as "causes
data loss, and is only recoverable from backup medium". reportbug didn't offer
an accurate classification.
Aftermath: (some files ommited for brevity)
/var/www/hosts/www.example.com/private/:
drwxr-xr-x 4 supaplex supaplex 4096 Jul 16 14:36 .
lrwxrwxrwx 1 supaplex supaplex 35 Jul 4 15:06 kw-mgr.htt ->
templates/kw-mgr-add.htt
lrwxrwxrwx 1 supaplex supaplex 29 Jul 4 15:06 serp.htt ->
templates/serp.htt
/var/www/hosts/www.example.com/private/templates/:
drwx------ 2 supaplex supaplex 4096 Jul 16 14:37 .

-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 447 Jul 16 14:37 kw-mgr-select.htt
-rwsr-sr-t 1 supaplex supaplex 0 Jul 16 14:37 serp.htt
Prior to this incident, I assume the files were 0644. My backups do not
have this data. =`( - oh well.
Actually, I've attempted to reproduce this issue, and it's
reproduceable.
I recreated dummy content in another similar directory, use'd cp -s
templates/* . from .. to create symlinks.
supaplex@www:~/www.example.com/private$ ls -l *.htt

templates/test.htt
supaplex@www:~/www.example.com/private$ ls -la templates/
drwx------ 2 supaplex supaplex 4096 Jul 16 14:55 .

-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 418 Jul 16 14:56 kw-mgr-add.htt
-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 418 Jul 16 14:56 serp.htt
-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 418 Jul 16 14:56 test.htt
Opened the symlinks only in Quanta via
sftp://example.com/var/www/hosts/www.example.com/private/
Quanta opens them after successive instances of sftp (kio-slave?)
transfers files. None of the three files render any text content in
each of the tabs w/in Quanta.
supaplex@www:~/www.example.com/private$ ls -l templates/
total 4
-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 0 Jul 16 14:57 kw-mgr-add.htt
-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 0 Jul 16 14:57 serp.htt
-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 418 Jul 16 14:56 test.htt
The file that's apparently spared is the last file Quanta opened (again,
no text content displays for editing)
After quitting Quanta, the last file is overwritten (no confirmation
dialogs suggest data is to be saved).
supaplex@www:~/www.example.com/private$ ls -l templates/
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 0 Jul 16 15:10 kw-mgr-add.htt
-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 0 Jul 16 15:10 serp.htt
-rw-r--r-- 1 supaplex supaplex 0 Jul 16 15:10 test.htt
Good luck, and Thanks =)

2007/4/11, Olivier Vitrat <ovit.debian@gmail.com>:
Hi,
The Debian Qt/KDE team is trying to update the bug status of some old
bugs in the BTS, and I'm helping with this task.
Some time ago, you've reported bug number 318658 "quanta truncates
targets of symlinks to empty files (0 bytes)" to Debian's Bug Tracking
System. You can read the bug report at:
http://bugs.debian.org/318658
We are sorry if nobody responded when you filed the bug, KDE has
gotten more bugs in the past years than the maintainers could handle.
The team is trying to fix this now, but we need your help. So please
respond to this mail and tell us if:
- you are still experiencing this bug (adding in what version)
- the bug was already fixed (if known, in which version),
- or if you have extra information on how reproduce this bug.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Olivier Vitrat
helper for the Debian Qt/KDE team
