  this was the case, once upon a time, though the login manager and the
desktop environment are hardly connected, and kde does not needs kdm at
all to work properly.

  You will just have *some* features of it removed (aka the switch user
& Co.), and I'm not even 100% sure, as I'm told it also works then kde
is fired from gdm.

  There is absolutely no point to have 2 login managers installed in the
same machine, so the best we could do is depeding upon:

  kdm | x-login-manager

  so that a guy that already has xdm/gdm/wdm/... installed may chose not
to have kdm installed. But such a virtual package does not exists, so
we're stuck, and I'm even not sure that would be a good solution anyway.

  so in 2 words like in 100, we won't do that because it barely affects
kde desktop as a whole, but could drag useless dependencies and
configuration headaches for sysadmins that just want their own login
manager.
