Bug#349285: quanta: solution (or problem fixed)

Package: quanta
Version: 4:3.5.4-1
Followup-For: Bug #349285

I've got the same problem. I tried reinstalling the package,
/usr/share/applications/kde/quanta.desktop is there and everything looks
fine.

Still there is neither a "Web Development" subfolder in the Development
menu folder, nor is there any occurence of Quanta anywhere in the KDE
menu. There is an entry at "Debian/Apps/Editors/Quanta Plus" though,
which is generated by the "/usr/share/menu/quanta menu-xdg" file, if I'm
not mistaken.

Besides, I've got the same problem with KDevelop, which should install
it's menu entry in the Development folder. On the other hand packages
like kdesvn work fine.

So I tried to compare the .desktop files of Quanta and kdesvn and the
only slight difference that could be related to this problem was:

Categories=Qt;KDE;Development;
vs.
Categories=Qt;KDE;Development;WebDevelopment;

As I understand it the KDE/Gnome menus are built from those categories
using the directory specification in "/etc/xdg/menus/*.menu" and the
related .directory files in "/usr/share/desktop-directories/".

So I simply tried to remove the WebDevelopment category to see if there
is a general problem with the quanta.desktop. After running kbuildsycoca
the Quanta link showed up in the Development menu folder -- fine.

Next thing was to check the /etc/xdg/ files, which seem correctly list
the WebDevelopment (and the kdevelop subdir) folders. The .directory
files seem to be fine as well.

Well, after googling around a bit. I found
http://docs.kde.org/userguide/kde-menu.html which describes a user
specific menu configuration I never heared of as well -- in
"$HOME/.config/menus". I discovered a "applications-kmenuedit.menu" in
this directory which listed a lot of pretty old stuff (Opera 5 etc.).

There was also a section about the "Development" folder, which does not
mention Quanta or WebDevelopment, but seems to completely override the
system wide settings. Renaming/removing the file and rerunning
kbuildsycoca fixes all the menu problems.

Long mail, but I thought I should describe the whole thing (also for my
own reference ;)). Besides that it could be a bug in kdebase, but I'm
not sure about this. But nevertheless, this bug can be closed.
