With either the KDE sound system enabled or disabled in the KDE Control 
Centre, external MIDI playback in denemo running under KDE locks the 
entire machine. denemo is calling aplaymidi. aplaymidi under KDE works 
fine when run from a konsole prompt.

The problem was with alsa-driver. A new bug has been opened against alsa-base
* #376382: alsa-base: MIDI playback on SB Live! 5.1 0220 combine with heavy 
disk activity = lockup
