Kopete 0.12.x was promised for KDE 3.5.4. However, the Kopete team
didn't get around to merging it into KDE in time. Whether they'll merge
for KDE 3.5.5 I can't possibly say, but even if they do, KDE 3.5.5
might not ship with Etch.
Manually grafting Kopete 0.12.x onto the existing kdenetwork module
would be a huge undertaking, and would be a support and bug tracking
nightmare for the lifespan of the Etch release, because it would
represent a huge divergence from upstream KDE and its support systems,
security, etc. No one on the Debian KDE team has expressed any
commitment to such an undertaking, so don't expect this solution to
happen.
Also, it isn't easy to upload Kopete 0.12.x as a separate package. It
would have to remain forever in experimental, since having 2 source
packages provide the same binary pacakge in Sid/Etch, both of which are
supported, just doesn't work. And this would only happen if we could
convince the FTP masters that it was a good idea (which it isn't) and
therefore to let the package pass the NEW queue.
So I'm afraid that if you want to use Kopete 0.12.x, you'll have to use
unofficial packages. http://manfred.cp69.de/debian is kindly offering
packages, and IIRC other people have built their own (see the recent
debian-kde list archives). So users who really want the latest and
greatest can certainly get it.
I hope this clarifies the situation.
Cheers,
Christopher Martin
