What errors do you get?  Do you try to unmount it while the removable media is 
still open in konqueror?  If so, try closing konqueror first and then 
unmounting it.

Yeah - it would be nice if the desktop watched the mount status (I'm not sure 
how to do that, or even if that is possible) and updated the icon 
accordingly.

Is this while the media is still mounted?

I don't see this problem on my KDE desktop with Debian, so it is also possible 
it is a problem local to your configuration.
