Further to my last post, Mattia's workaround solves it for me (at
last!). But this bug is still needs fixing - it is serious enough to
put people off Linux.
|I had the same problem, try to:

|- Open konqueror
|- Go to: Settings --> Configure Konqueror --> Performance
|- In "Preloading", set the "Maximum number of instances kept preloaded"
| to 0.
|- Retry to mount, visit and umount your CD-ROM
|
