Hi. This bug is reproducible when using tcsh as login shell. Login works perfectly well when using bash what might have caused the experience that the bug is unreproducible. Login seems to fail because of line 33 in /etc/kde3/kdm/Xsessions which produces a syntax error when run manually from a login tcsh: "Badly placed (." Regards, Alex.
