I'm seeing the same problem.

In /var/log/kdm.1.log I found this message:


Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated 
messages (i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it 
uses) go to the daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog 
configuration to find out to which file(s) it is logged. PAM logs 
messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.


So I looked around and found this in /var/log/auth.log:


Mar 15 20:54:25 supernova kdm-np(pam_unix)[283]: authentication failure; 
logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=:0 ruser= rhost= user=graham


That's the only thing I can find in the logs that might be helpful.
