Hello,
lan:// is not meant for browsing samba network only. A number of other
protocols is supported too. Your problem is that a LISa daemon is
needed to get lan:// functional. This daemon is included in kdenetwork and you can
get it with apt-get:
apt-get install lisa
Don't forget to configure LISa in Control Center after installing it:
Control Center - Internet & Network - Local Network Browsing
