So sid has pppoeconf 1.9 and sarge has 1.7?
Could you also send the output of:
dpkg -l gettext-base ppp pppoe sed whiptail whiptail-provider
on the sarge system?
Could you test on the sid system if installing the stable version
fixes the problem?
apt-get install pppoeconf/stable
