This is the sort of thing that many people these days do by showing live
feeds coming from microblogging platforms. For instance, we might have a
window showing live <http://identi.ca/tag/debian> or
<http://identi.ca/group/debian>. But beware that this is not without
potential negative consequences; for instance, being myself an identi.ca
user, I'm aware that for any single group out there you will also find
both positive and negative dents floating around. So it might be
interesting to show the liveliness of a community, but it might strike
back.
You might want to have a look at the above two feeds --- or follow them
for a while --- before deciding what to do.
