I personally like the idea of having a mascot. Still, it is not something that we can decide "too lightly", as it's a big step in project image (IMHO). It should probably be endorsed officially by some project-wide vote. Before getting there however, there is quite some preliminary work to be done. First of all we need a contest not actually to decide which one to use, but rather to attract attention on the fact we are considering having one. That is the only way to get a decent critical mass of mascot proposals. All in all, I believe it would make sense to: - launch a call for mascot (1 year seems a bit too long to me, in the sense that I don't believe that such a long period will give us more mascots than, say, a 6 months period) - have a public contest over the received proposal to "shortlist" a set of mascots (max 10, possibly less) - have a vote on those 10 to have official project endorsement (or no endorsement at all in case "further discussion" wins) If people here like the plan, what is needed to go forward is: 1) setting up a submission infrastructure (I guess art.debian.net already is enough for that) 2) document the rules / timeline 3) draft an announcement of the call for mascot, finalize it, and start broadcasting it around I can't volunteer for any of the above ATM, but if you go forward, I'll be happy to advertise it in bits from DPL mails or anything else that could help spreading the news. Thanks for the idea! Cheers. -- Stefano Zacchiroli -o- PhD in Computer Science \ PostDoc @ Univ.
