One comment about this question.

Q: Why not just use dselect's ftp method like normal?
A: This will order your packages incorrectly.

I suggest to change to "This will not order your packages correctly"
Rationale: You can't be sure that dselect is *always* wrong ;-)
[ The fact that it does not use any sorting algorithm does not guarantee,
by itself, that the order will be always wrong with a probability of 100% ].

Moreover, the comment

"I believe the current result is removing libreadline to install the new
version, but this breaks bash, leaving the system in an unusable and
unbootable state for most people."

is either true or false, but I think that "I believe" is not the best
wording for an official document like this.

Note: I don't think this comment is true (I think that some postinst were
converted from shell scripts into ELF programs so that nothing bad should
happen), so I suggest to replace it by a different one, for example,
saying that dpkg may refuse to install certain packages if some others are
not installed yet, and saying that this may result in the need of another
[I]nstall run (or another two). And we may say that this may need a lot
more of time than using any of the other methods.

Thanks.
