iBook Debian kernel upgrade

hi list:

I have Debian (Sarge) installed on an iBook G3 (White book), the
kernel is now 2.6.8, I downloaded 2.6.17.2 from kernel.org, would
anybody tell me how to upgrade?

The downloaded file is: patch-2.6.16.2, the content starts with these:

diff --git a/Makefile b/Makefile
index 1700d3f..7b3837f 100644
--- a/Makefile
+++ b/Makefile
@@ -1,7 +1,7 @@
VERSION = 2
PATCHLEVEL = 6
SUBLEVEL = 17
-EXTRAVERSION =
+EXTRAVERSION = .2
NAME=Crazed Snow-Weasel

The reason that I want to upgrade kernel is that the audio driver
doesn't work, so I see the speaker logo at the upper-right but no
sound could be played at all. I ran the following three commands:

modprobe soundcore dmasound_core dmasound_pmac
modprobe dmasound_core dmasound_pmac
modprobe dmasound_pmac

And the 3rd one returned error:

FATAL: Error inserting dmasound_pmac
(/lib/modules/2.6.8-powerpc/kernel/sound/oss/dmasound/dmasound_pmac.ko):
No such device

Kernel upgrade was recommended for fixing this error.

Thanks in advance,

Lawrence
