Re: Configuring for Diskonkey

Thanks for the tips, Rogerio. A
modprobe vfat
was apparently all that was necessary to retrieve that fs support from the kernel. After that, I could mount the diskonkey w no problem.

The hotplug install sounds like a good idea--I'll give that a try.

Thanks again. --Harvey

If you install hotplug, then you won't have to manually load the
usb-storage module, since it will be automatically loaded when you plug
your USB drive and automatically removed when you unplug it.

How do I get Debian to recognize this usb storage device? If it is necessary to add filesystem type vfat to the system, how do I do that?

You have many options here. One of them is to create a file called
/etc/filesystems that contains the possible filesystem types that you
want to mount.

This way, whenever you have to mount a filesystem, the mount command
will check that file to see what filesystems it can use in case there is
an auto keyword in the /etc/fstab field that specifies the fs type.

Since you seem to be using a stock kernel from Debian, the vfat module
should be available.

Read more about the process above in the mount manual page.
