I have an older iMac, too, and I managed to figure things out after a
lot of effort. I will write it up sometime when I get the chance, but
until then, this is the good site for information on old macs:
  http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/hardware/hardware2.html

For example, here's the document that includes the vertical refresh
rates for display on my iMac:
  http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G3/original_iMac/iMac.15.html
You'll have to find more information about your particular model to find
whether these numbers apply to your system.
