1. Make sure that eth0 is your airport card (and not eth1).
   The modules must have been loaded. (modprobe airport)

2. the eth0 must be up first. (ifconfig eth0 up)

3. try to run iwconfig without any options to get a status

4. what does dmesg or /var/log/messages say right after 
   loading the airport module?
