Problems installing Debian Woody on a PowerMac G3 ...
Hello,
I'm new to PowerPC platform (but a user of Debian on i86), excuse me if I don't
give the right information...
I'm trying for the first time
to install a Debian Woody on a Mac G3 : I don't know exactly the name of this
machine, it's a mid-tour (squared) with sorts of handles on each corner ...
the /proc/cpuinfo gives following info :
cpu : 7400, altivec supported
temperature : 12-15 C (uncalibrated)
clock : 400MHz
revision : 2.7 (pvr 000c 0207)
bogomips : 796.26
machine : PowerMac3,1
motherboard : PowerMac3,1 MacRISC Power Macintosh
L2 cache : 1024K unified
memory : 64MB
pmac-generation : NewWorld
uname -a gives :
Linux macpm5 2.4.18-newpmac #1 Thu Mar 14 22:44:49 EST 2002 ppc unknown
I've some big problems with installaton :
- firstly when installing locales package or reconfiguring it (dpkg-reconfigure locales),
I get messages about segmentation fault :
# dpkg-reconfigure locales
Generating locales...
fr_FR.ISO-8859-1.../usr/sbin/locale-gen: line 22: 410 Segmentation fault localedef -i $input -c -f $charset $locale
done
fr_FR.UTF-8.../usr/sbin/locale-gen: line 22: 421 Segmentation fault localedef -i $input -c -f $charset $locale
done
fr_FR.ISO-8859-15@euro.../usr/sbin/locale-gen: line 22: 429 Segmentation fault localedef -i $input -c -f $charset $locale
done
- my second problem is about the X configuration : although I've found the graphic card is an ATI one :
# lspci
00:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth AGP
00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF
01:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth PCI
01:0d.0 PCI bridge: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21154 (rev 05)
02:07.0 Class ff00: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo Mac I/O (rev 02)
02:08.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo USB
02:09.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo USB
02:0a.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB12LV23 OHCI Compliant IEEE-1394 Controller
02:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21142/43 (rev 41)
03:0b.0 Host bridge: Apple Computer Inc. UniNorth PCI
I can't configure it (with debconf or not) !!!
- sometimes (I can't understand when), I've some OOPS in the syslog !!
I suspect a RAM bug, but I don't know on PowerPC a tool to check it
(equivalent of memtest86)
If anyone can help me, thanks a lot,
fred.
