Wacky 16bpp colors (KDE)

Hey folks--

XServer insists on rendering "solarized" colors in 16bpp mode. My
experience has been that this usually results from bad color maps. I've
tried just about everything I can think of, but without success. I've
searched the archives, but couldn't find a thread discussing this
problem. And I'm assuming that byte/bit ordering in the 16bit
framebuffer is not an issue.

I'm not doing anything fancy with any configuration files.

Anyone have any ideas?

XFree86.0.log reports a 16 bit frame buffer (see excerpt below).

For the record:
Machine: Macintosh 8500 (OldWorld)
Kernel: 2.4.17
Distribution: unstable (sid)
Monitor jumpered to: 1152x864
Video Memory: 2MB.
KDE window manager.
The XServer Control Center (which I'm not sure how to interpret) reports:
  Depths (7) 16, 1, 4, 8, 15, 24, 32
Depth of Root Window 16 planes
Number of Colormaps Minimum 1, Maximum 1
  Default Colormap 32
Default Number of Colormap Cells 64
Preallocated Pixels Black 0, White 65,535
