Fast here too. Actually I do all the building of Evolution (the software I
hack at work) building on my powerbook, since it is always with me. My
desktop machine is a dual celeron 433 and it is just a bit faster, not much.

Maybe you are using the framebuffer-device Xserver, that makes the screen
redraws very slow since it is not much accelerated. Try Xpmac or the
experimental XFree4 debs instead.
