   The newest PPC kernels include a BenH modified input system that Xpmac
   doesn't directly understand.  You can check the mailing list archives for
   recent discussions that explain your options, or I'm sure someone will
   chime in with instructions soon ;)

Okay.  With that tip, I found and followed the mouse-juggling
instructions at BenH's home page.  That didn't do it, so I dropped the
Potato kernel in favour of 2.2.17pre10-ben1.  Now XPmac responds to my
mouse!  This had really been driving me crazy.  Thank you very much,
Wilhelm, for the clue.
