Just wanted to make sure it was not overlooked. IIRC, Linus mentioned
this in his google talk but he does emphasize that git is primarily an
SCM and not a build-management tool.

I just had a look. The author (who posts here) is probably in a better
position to say than I.
It appears to solve a problem for which another answer is:
Importing from other revision control systems
1. Can I import from tar files (archives)?
2. Can I import from CVS?
3. Can I import from svn?
4. Can I import from arch/baz/tla?
5. Can I import from Perforce?
6. Can I import from Mercurial?
7. Can I import from other SCMs?
but I don't think that's the problem here.
