That's how I understood the rejection, and that's totally reasonable to
me.  I guess I wasn't really aware of the Maintainer possibility -
despite having tracked Debian for 14 year now :-)

At the time of the NMU, I was unfortunately very busy with the Large
Hadron Collider at CERN.  I'm still active, but I'm a little hesitant to
bother Kevin to upload new packages all the time - especially at times
when I'm very busy and can't respond all that quickly.

I'd gotten the (wrong) impression that the only way to maintain a
package was to become a developer.  The Maintainer alternative seems
like the right thing though.   

Just one question:  It seems that Maintainers cannot upload to the NEW
queue.  However, since some of the sub-packages of root-system contain
version numbers, don't they need to go through the NEW queue?  If that's
the case, then I think I'd have to be a developer to maintain
root-system effectively.  But maybe I got it wrong?
