Lol. Oh, *that* thread. :)

Yeah, I maintain that -release is not good but in this case, it's
not my library, so I have to deal.

Unless anyone objects, I think encoding the release version in the
-dev and -doc package names, and that plus the SONAME in the runtime
package name is the best way to do it.
