Hmm. Do you have a reference for that?

A quick test with kernel 2.6.8-1 revealed that writing a large file to a
floppy is very fast (and the subsequent unmount slow) if the floppy is
async-mounted, while writing the same file is slow (and the subsequent
unmount fast) if the floppy is sync-mounted. This is the case with both
the "vfat" and the "msdos" filesystems. So at least there seems to be
some difference between a sync-mount and an async-mount.
