Either would be fine.  When version 1.61 is released and packaged as
1.6.1, the 1.6.1 will be regarded as newer than both 1.6 and 1.6.0.
Check the Debian Packaging manual section 5 for details.

To use a wrong version number without asking is stupid.  Asking isn't.
