I would like to test this patch, so it can be accepted into
debian-installer proper, but building debian-installer, and making
sure these custom version of d-i is used by live-helper seems like a
time-consuming and difficult task.

Chris, would you have the time needed to provide the build of d-i that
you made when testing the patch, and instructions for how to make
debian-live use that build of d-i?
