Probably the right question to ask is: is there any chance to use the
driver without touching the non-free firmware (nor any other non-free
stuff, for that matters)?

IIUC, the free driver can go in main, as long as it provides a
significant amount of functionality without depending on non-free stuff.
Otherwise, it belongs in contrib.
