Yes, that's a good point.  So if they insist on removal of the
messages (which they have not done at this point), we can replace them
with a paraphrase, include a notation that we have done so, and why,
and a pointer to the present thread, and make damn sure we keep all
their email addresses fully visible.

Indeed, but alas, copyright law allows party Y to sue us too.
