Do you have the snd_pcm_oss kernel module loaded?
I think that you for some reason you don't have it loaded otherwise
oss would appear in /proc/asound.

It might be enough to run "udevsynthesize" as root.
It froze my machine on the first attempt, I had to switch it off :-(
It worked on the second attempt but did not change anything.
