Take a look at /usr/share/doc/ifupdown/examples , for some scripts that configure your interface depending on the network it finds. E.g. using ping, it determines which local network you are and configures the ip addresses accordingly. These scripts are called when (sudo) 'ifup eth0' is done. See also 'man interfaces'.
