Mostly, because one has to know what hardware one's machine consists of. I would suggest you find your machine on this site [0], and find a guide that includes a .config file (or ``kernel config'', or something similar). That saves you the work. But I myself recompiled my own first kernel approximately 15 times -- I simply kept trying. If you just want to run your computer, couldn't the stock kernel of Debian Sarge suffice?
