Yes. That is very odd indeed. Specifically, you should be routing
correctly and everything, including the gateway.

I suspect that, for some reason, you can't talk to the gateway
correctly.  Try using tcpdump when you have the failure situation, and
see what you are sending and getting back.

That may well illustrate the cause of the problem for you.
