Is your card in 'Managed' mode? Some cards have various modes,
AP (for being an Accesspoint), Ad-Hoc (for a all peers network), Monitor
(for war-driving;), Managed (for being on a network managed by an AP ).
You can set it with iwconfig. man iwconfig.
